Rising Floodwaters and Desperate Prayers: A Tragic Day at a Tennessee Plastics Factory |
ERWIN, Tenn. — As Hurricane Helene unleashed record-breaking rainfall on East Tennessee, the swollen Nolichucky River surged beyond its banks, flooding a small plastics factory and cutting off the only road out. Trapped and desperate, a group of workers climbed onto a truck's trailer in front of the plant, but were tragically swept away by the powerful floodwaters.

In the days following the September 27 disaster, the bodies of five Impact Plastics Inc. employees were recovered: Sibrina Barnett, 53; Monica Hernandez-Corona, 44; Bertha Mendoza, 56; Johnny Peterson, 55; and Lidia Verdugo Gastelum, 63. The search continues for a sixth employee, Rosa Maria Andrade Reynosa, 29. Five others who had been on the trailer managed to survive.
