U.S. President Joe Biden announced on Sunday that he had pardoned his son, Hunter Biden, who had been convicted of making false statements on a gun background check, illegally possessing a firearm, and pleading guilty to federal tax charges.
"Today, I signed a pardon for my son Hunter," Biden stated in a release from the White House. "From the day I took office, I committed not to interfere with the Justice Department’s decision-making, and I have upheld that promise. However, I have watched my son face selective and unfair prosecution."

The White House had consistently stated that President Joe Biden would not pardon or commute the sentences of his son, Hunter Biden, a recovering drug addict who became a focal point for Republican criticism, including from President-elect Donald Trump.
"No reasonable person who looks at the facts of Hunter’s cases can conclude anything other than that he was singled out solely because he is my son," President Biden said in the statement.
