A Supermodel Through the Decades

Kate Moss, a fashion icon and one of the most enduring supermodels of her generation, celebrates her 50th birthday. Over the decades, Moss has defined and redefined the modeling world, leaving an indelible mark on the industry with her effortless style, distinctive look, and influential presence on and off the runway.

British supermodel Kate Moss celebrates her 50th birthday today, still standing as a cultural icon much like when she first burst onto the scene over three decades ago.

Born in South London, Moss was discovered by a top modeling agent at just 14 years old and began appearing in magazines and commercials by 16. As she reaches this milestone birthday, it’s clear why she remains one of Vogue’s most beloved cover stars.

Photographer Corinne Day, who shot Moss for her first Vogue cover in March 1993, once reflected on Moss’s early days: “She was just this cocky kid from Croydon,” Day recalled in an interview with Vogue. “She wasn’t like a model… but I knew she was going to be famous.”

What followed Kate Moss’s discovery was a meteoric rise to fame, as the waifish, 5-foot-7-inch model became the face of the infamous '90s fashion trend known as "heroin chic"—a grungy, minimalist aesthetic that stood in stark contrast to the glamorous, statuesque look embodied by supermodels like Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, and Claudia Schiffer.

Moss quickly became the star of campaigns for major fashion houses such as Burberry, Chanel, and Calvin Klein, solidifying her status as a style icon. Throughout her illustrious career, she graced the cover of British Vogue more than 40 times.

Yet, it was often her off-set appearances that truly captured the public's imagination. With a knack for pairing vintage clothing with unique accessories, Moss earned the enduring label of “global style icon,” renowned for her seemingly effortless, eclectic fashion sense as much as her polished photoshoots.

Legendary photographer David Bailey, who captured some of Kate Moss's most iconic images, once explained her enduring appeal to CNN: “Kate has a unique beauty that is totally democratic and has a universal appeal.” This quality helped Moss transcend the fashion world and become a global icon.

Moss's life has often been under the microscope, with the tabloids documenting her high-profile romances with stars like Johnny Depp, magazine editor Jefferson Hack, and The Libertines' front man Pete Doherty. Her alleged drug use also made headlines in 2005, leading to the loss of lucrative modeling contracts with brands such as Burberry, Chanel, and H&M. That same year, Moss publicly apologized and voluntarily entered a rehabilitation clinic in Arizona. Reflecting on the ordeal in a rare 2022 BBC radio interview, she said, “I felt sick and was quite angry, because everybody I knew took drugs. So for them to focus on me, and to try to take my daughter away, I thought was really hypocritical.”

Despite the controversy, Moss rebounded and climbed Forbes' list of the world's highest-paid models. Since retiring from the runway in 2004, she has launched her own modeling agency and wellness brand, Cosmos's, further cementing her legacy in the industry.

Beyond fashion, Moss has been immortalized in art, with Marc Quinn creating a gold statue of her—the largest since Ancient Egypt—and Lucian Freud painting her portrait. She has also appeared in music videos for icons like Johnny Cash, Paul McCartney, Primal Scream, The White Stripes, and Elton John, securing her place in pop culture history.
